Unraveling the Dark Side in Revenge of the Sith

Caitlin and Charlotte continue their deep dive into the dark side and the development of the concept. They examine The Making of Revenge of the Sith (JW Rinzler) and discuss possible avenues George Lucas was exploring when he was crafting his final piece to the Star Wars saga at the time. We also debate the idea of the dark side as physically corruptible by bringing up one fan’s theory. Origins, behind the scenes tidbits, mazes, and so much more.

The Dark Side

Caitlin and Charlotte lead with the question: Once you start down the dark path, *does* the Dark Side forever dominate your destiny? We trace the dark side’s historical origins, including the early drafts of Star Wars with the Ashla and Bogan, to the Revenge of the Sith novelization and much more. Then we dive into Anakin Skywalker’s journey into the dark side and parse through our origin hypothesis. Finally, we talk about Ben Solo, redemption, and whether the dark side *does* dominate his destiny, and what that means for the story. We talk about Robert Bly’s concept on the human shadow and how that relates to the Dark Side. All this and more on this episode of Skytalkers! This episode was edited by Danny Pirtle.

Our 50th episode (!!!) is all about Force visions, premonitions, and cave sequences in Star Wars. What do these obstacles mean for our characters? What purpose do they serve in the story, and what do they mean? In part one, we talk about the prequel trilogy and the Clone Wars: Anakin’s dreams, Mortis (Ahsoka and Anakin), and even the Clone Wars microseries. In part two, it’s all about the original trilogy: Luke’s cave sequence and his vision of his friends dying. We also talk briefly about Rebels. In part three, we discuss the sequel trilogy: Rey’s vision in The Force Awakens, the mirror cave in The Last Jedi, and Rey and Kylo’s visions together. All this and more on this episode of Skytalkers!

Caitlin finally read the Revenge of the Sith novelization by Matthew Stover! In part one, we discuss the merits of novelizations and how this one stacks up comparatively. In part two, they go through the characterizations of Padmé, Anakin, and Obi-Wan. In part three, they practice “lectio divina” and choose passages for each other to analyze immediately.
